- A:The Secondary Air Injection (AIR) system is equipped in certain engines, including the 4.3L V6, 5.7L V8, and 7.4L V8 engines. This system helps reduce the levels of unburned hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) in the exhaust gases by injecting outside air into the hot exhaust gases flowing through the exhaust manifolds. The system includes components such as the AIR pump, vacuum control solenoid, shut-off valve, check valves, and hoses and pipes. The AIR pump draws in filtered outside air and pumps it into the exhaust manifolds, controlled by the PCM. The vacuum control solenoid controls the AIR shut-off valve, which opens to allow air from the pump to reach the check valves. The check valves prevent the backflow of exhaust gases into the AIR system. The system is activated by the PCM based on factors such as coolant temperature and engine deceleration. The PCM may turn off the AIR pump's electric clutch under certain conditions.
