Hold the tie-rod with a pair of locking pliers or wrench and loosen the jam nut enough to mark the position of the tie-rod end in relation to the threads. Loosen the nut from the tie-rod end ball-stud about 1/8-inch.

To remove the tie rod, start by loosening the wheel lug nuts and raising the front of the vehicle. Support it securely on jack stands, block the rear wheels, and set the parking brake. Remove the front wheel. Hold the tie rod with a pair of locking pliers or wrench and loosen the jam nut enough to mark the position of the tie rod end in relation to the threads. Remove the cotter pin and loosen the nut on the tie rod end stud. Disconnect the tie rod from the steering knuckle arm with a puller and remove the nut to separate the tie rod. To install the tie rod, thread the tie rod end onto the marked position and insert the tie rod stud into the steering knuckle arm. Tighten the jam nut securely. Install the castle nut on the stud and tighten it to the torque specifications. Install a new cotter pin. If necessary, tighten the ball joint nut a little more to align the hole in the ball stud with the slots in the nut, but do not loosen the nut to achieve this alignment. Install the wheel and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts to the torque specifications. Finally, have the wheel alignment checked and adjusted if necessary.
