Position the new seal in the bore with the open end of the seal facing IN.

If the vehicle has a manual transmission, you should also reinstall the clutch disc and pressure plate.

To remove the old oil seal from the cover, you should use a seal puller or a large screwdriver, being very careful not to distort the cover or scratch the crankshaft.

To prevent the pulley from turning while loosening the pulley bolts, you should place a bar through one of the pulley holes and wedge it against the bottom of the front cover.

Remove the lower flywheel cover and have an assistant wedge a large screwdriver in the flywheel ring gear teeth to hold the engine from turning.

To make installation easier, you can apply a small amount of oil to the outer edge of the new seal.

Remove the transmission and the driveplate. Pry the Crankshaft Seal from the rear cover with a screwdriver, being careful not to nick or scratch the crankshaft or the seal bore. Note how far it's recessed into the housing bore before removal so the new seal can be installed to the same depth. Thoroughly clean the seal bore in the block with a shop towel, removing all traces of oil and dirt. Do not lubricate the seal or touch the sealing lip. Ensure the seal is installed in the correct orientation, it has a reverse-lip design. The seal part number must be visible when it's installed. Ideally, a seal installation tool should be used to press the new seal back into place. If the proper seal installation tool is unavailable, use a large drift and carefully drive the new seal squarely into the seal bore and flush with the rear cover. Then, install the driveplate and the transmission.

The seal should be placed over the end of the crankshaft and carefully tapped into place.

Lubricate the balancer hub with clean engine oil and reinstall the crankshaft balancer. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.

You can replace the rear main bearing oil seal without removing the oil pan or crankshaft by following these steps: Remove the transmission. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the pressure plate and clutch disc. Next, remove the flywheel or driveplate. Using a seal removal tool or a large screwdriver, carefully pry the old seal out of the block, being cautious not to scratch or nick the crankshaft.

A small amount of RTV sealant should be applied to the crankshaft Woodruff key before installing the crankshaft pulley.

Before installing the new rear main bearing oil seal, apply a light coat of clean engine oil to the seal lip and the outer edge of the seal.

Remove the lower flywheel cover and have an assistant wedge a large screwdriver in the flywheel ring gear teeth to hold the engine from turning.

Before reinstalling the vibration damper, lubricate the seal lips with engine oil.

Carefully pry the oil seal out of the cover with a seal puller or a large screwdriver. Be very careful not to distort the cover or scratch the crankshaft. Wrap the electrician's tape around the tip of the screwdriver to avoid damage to the crankshaft.

The seal bore in the block should be thoroughly cleaned with a shop towel, removing all oil and dirt.

The rear crankshaft seal can be replaced without removing the oil pan or crankshaft. First, remove the transmission. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the pressure plate and clutch disc. Next, remove the flywheel or driveplate. Using a seal removal tool or a large screwdriver, carefully pry the seal out of the block. Be careful not to scratch or nick the crankshaft in the process. Clean the bore in the block and the seal contact surface on the crankshaft. Check the crankshaft surface for scratches and nicks that could damage the new seal lip and cause oil leaks. If the crankshaft is damaged, the only alternative is a new or different crankshaft. Apply a light coat of clean engine oil to the seal lip and outer edge of the new seal. Press the new seal into place with GM tool no. J34924(if available). The seal lip must face toward the front of the engine. If the special tool isn't available, carefully work the seal lip over the end of the crankshaft and tap the seal in with a hammer and blunt drift until it's seated squarely in the bore. Install the flywheel or driveplate. If equipped with a manual transmission, reinstall the clutch disc and pressure plate. Finally, reinstall the transmission.

You should drive the new seal into place with a large socket and a hammer, ensuring it enters the bore squarely and is driven in until the front face is flush with the cover.

Drive the seal into the bore with GM tool no. J-23042A, or equivalent, until it's completely seated.
