Q:
How to replace driveaxle oil seals in Automatic transaxle for Chevrolet Cobalt,HHR,Pontiac G5 and Saturn ION? Posted by Customer
A:
Wheel leaks frequently occur due to wear of the wheel seals. Replacement of these seals is relatively easy since the repairs can be performed without removing the transaxle from the vehicle. The wheel seals are located on the sides of the transaxle, where the driveaxles are attached. If leakage at the seal is suspected, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. If the seal is leaking, fluid will be found on the sides of the transaxle. To remove the left-side seal, remove the snap-ring on the stub shaft and use a screwdriver or seal removal tool to carefully pry the oil seal out of the transaxle bore. Measure the distance that the stub axle protrudes beyond the sleeve and remove the sleeve from the stub shaft using a special puller. Compare the old seal to the new one to ensure it's the correct one. For installation, coat the new seal with transmission fluid and use a seal installation tool to drive it into the bore. Use a special tool to press the new sleeve onto the stub shaft and install a new snap-ring on the stub shaft before installing the driveaxle. The right-side seal removal requires removing the snap-ring on the end of the stub shaft and using a slide hammer and puller adapter to pull out the stub axle. Remove the inner snap ring and measure the distance that the stub axle protrudes beyond the sleeve. Use a special puller to remove the sleeve from the stub shaft. For installation, use a special driver to install the new sleeve to the same depth as the original. Coat the new seal with transmission fluid and use a seal installation tool to drive it into the bore. Install new snap-rings on the stub shaft and guide the stub shaft through the seal, tapping it into place until it is seated. Install the driveaxle and check the transaxle fluid level.

Q:
How to replace driveaxle oil seals in Manual transaxle for Chevrolet Cobalt,HHR and Saturn ION? Posted by Customer
A:
Lubricant leaks occasionally occur due to wear of the wheel seals. Replacement of these seals is relatively easy, since the repairs can be performed without removing the transaxle from the vehicle. The wheel seals are located in either sides of the transaxle, where the inner Constant Velocity (CV) joints are splined into the differential. If leakage at the seal is suspected, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. If the seal is leaking, fluid will be found on the side of the transaxle. Remove the driveaxle. If you're replacing the right side Wheel Seal, also remove the intermediate shaft. Using a screwdriver or prybar, carefully pry the wheel seal out of the transaxle bore. If the wheel seal cannot be removed with a screwdriver or prybar, a special wheel seal removal tool (available at auto parts stores) will be required. Using a seal driver or a large deep socket as a drift, install the new wheel seal. Drive it into the bore squarely until it is flush with the transaxle case. Lubricate the lip of the new seal with multi-purpose grease. Install the driveaxle assembly. Be careful not to damage the lip of the new seal. Check the transaxle lubricant level, adding as necessary.
