The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is a thermistor, a resistor that changes its resistance value based on temperature changes. This change in resistance directly affects the voltage signal from the sensor to the PCM. As the sensor temperature decreases, the resistance values increase, and as the sensor temperature increases, the resistance values decrease. Any issue in the ECT sensor circuit will set a diagnostic trouble code. To replace the sensor, ensure the ignition key is in the off position and drain approximately one gallon from the cooling system. Disconnect the electrical connector and carefully unscrew the sensor. Wrap the threads of the new sensor with Teflon sealing tape to prevent leakage and thread corrosion. Installation is simply the reverse of removal. However, handle the coolant sensor with care as damage to this sensor will affect the operation of the entire fuel injection system. Finally, add coolant as required.
