On 1990 through 1992 Samurai models, the Crank Angle Sensor (CAS) is located in the distributor and serves as an information sensor for the PCM and the "pick-up coil" for the ignition system. It generates a square-wave variable voltage signal as the signal rotor turns, which is sent to the PCM to calculate engine speed and piston position. Failure of the CAS may set a code 42. On 1996 and later models, the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor is located at the front of the engine on SOHC engines or at the back above the rear crankshaft main seal on DOHC engines. It functions as a magnetic pick-up coil, generating an AC voltage pulse as the crankshaft rotates, and the PCM uses this signal to calculate the crankshaft rotational speed. To check the CKP sensor, unplug the electrical connector and measure the resistance between the sensor terminals and to ground, comparing the measurement to specifications. If out of range, replace the sensor, and if problems persist, have the CKP sensor circuit checked. To replace the CKP sensor, on SOHC engines, raise the front of the vehicle, unplug the electrical connector, remove the retaining bolt, and then reinstall the new sensor. On DOHC engines, remove the transmission and flywheel, unplug the electrical connector, remove the retaining bolt, and reinstall the new sensor. For 1990 through 1992 Samurai models, refer to the Crank Angle Sensor (CAS) check in Section 12 and replace the distributor.
