Q:
How do you remove the rear driveshaft? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the rear driveshaft, first raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Place the transmission in Neutral with the parking brake off and block the front wheels. Make reference marks on the driveshaft and the pinion flange in line with each other. Remove the rear universal joint bolts and straps, using a screwdriver or prybar to prevent the driveshaft from turning. Tape the bearing caps to the spider and, if applicable, remove the support bearing mounting bolts. Lower the rear of the driveshaft and slide the front out of the transmission or transfer case. Wrap a plastic bag over the housing to prevent fluid loss and contamination. To install, remove the plastic bag and clean the area. Slide the front of the driveshaft into the transmission or transfer case. Raise the rear into position, ensuring the marks are aligned. Remove the tape securing the bearing caps and install the straps and bolts, tightening to the specified torque. For the front driveshaft on 4WD models, raise the front of the vehicle and remove the skid plate if present. Mark the relationship of the driveshaft to the front differential companion flange and the transfer case flange. Remove the bolts and straps from the differential flange, then remove the bolts securing the driveshaft to the transfer case flange. Push the driveshaft to the rear to separate it from the differential flange, then lower and pull it out of the transfer case. To install, attach the front end of the shaft to the differential companion flange and the rear to the transfer case flange, ensuring the marks are aligned. Install the straps and bolts, tightening to the specified torque. Finally, install the skid plate if applicable.
