This will ensure that the brake shoes drag on the drum as it rotates. Then, back off the star wheel until the shoes no longer drag. Reinstall the plug in the drum. Mount the wheel, install the lug nuts, and lower the vehicle. Finally, tighten the lug nuts to the proper torque specifications. To adjust the brakes, make several forward and reverse stops and operate the parking brake until satisfactory pedal action is achieved. Before driving the vehicle, carefully check the operation of the brakes.

Install the drum and adjust the brakes using an adjusting tool to ensure proper pedal position and functionality before driving.

Check the adjuster operation and replace the assembly if needed. Lubricate the parking brake lever and cable, attach the lever to the shoe, and apply high-temperature grease to the shoe contact areas on the backing plate.

To replace the rear brake shoes on a vehicle, start by loosening the rear wheel lug nuts and raising the rear of the vehicle on jackstands. Release the parking brake and block the front wheels. Remove the rear wheels and then proceed to remove the brake caliper, mounting bracket, and brake disc. If working on a 2014 or earlier model, wash the brake assembly with brake system cleaner and remove the screw and clip securing the bottom of the shoe. Lift one end of the shoe over the axle flange and remove it. Before installing the new shoe, ensure the adjuster screw and tappet slots are parallel with the backing plate. Reverse the removal procedure to install the new shoe, making sure the ends of the shoe seat properly in the adjuster screw and tappet slots. For 2015 and later models, unhook the parking brake cable from the park brake lever and wash the brake assembly with brake system cleaner. Remove the hold-down spring and unhook the return spring from both shoes. Lower the assembly down past the axle and twist the two brake shoes to release the lower return spring and adjuster wheel. Before installing the new shoes, ensure the adjuster screw and tappet slots are parallel with the backing plate. Reverse the removal procedure to install the new shoes, making sure the ends of the shoes seat properly in the adjuster screw and tappet slots. Adjust the parking brake as necessary.
