Q:
How do you remove and inspect the Timing Chain and Sprocket for Chevrolet Cobalt,HHR and Saturn ION? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove and inspect the timing system components, start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal and removing the spark plugs, valve cover, engine oil, and drivebelt. Remove the drivebelt tensioner and the engine front cover, then set the No. 1 piston at TDC by aligning the marks on the crankshaft sprocket, intake camshaft sprocket, and exhaust camshaft sprocket. Remove the timing chain tensioner, upper timing chain guide, and adjustable timing chain guide. Next, remove the exhaust camshaft sprocket bolt and the intake camshaft sprocket bolt, discarding them and installing new bolts for reassembly. Carefully remove the timing chain through the top of the cylinder head, taking caution not to rotate the camshafts or crankshaft. Remove the timing chain drive sprocket and the timing chain oiling nozzle from the engine block. Inspect all components for wear or damage and replace any questionable parts. For installation, ensure the crankshaft sprocket's timing mark is correctly positioned and install the intake camshaft sprocket with a new bolt. Lower the timing chain into place, making sure the bright-colored link aligns with the INT designation on the intake camshaft sprocket. Engage the plated link on the chain with the crankshaft sprocket timing mark and proceed to install the adjustable timing chain guide, exhaust camshaft sprocket with a new bolt, fixed timing chain guide, and upper timing chain guide. Tighten all bolts to their respective torque specifications. Compress the timing chain tensioner following the specified steps and measurements, then install it. Apply RTV sealant to the timing chain guide access plug threads and install it. Finally, reassemble the valve cover, engine front cover, and other components in reverse order, ensuring to refill the crankcase with oil, reconnect the battery, and check for any leaks during engine operation. It's crucial to handle this procedure with expertise, as any errors can result in severe engine damage. Double-check all work and ensure the timing marks are correctly aligned before attempting to start the engine.

Q:
How to remove and install timing chains and Camshaft position actuator for Chevrolet Cobalt,HHR and Saturn ION? Posted by Customer
A:
Special tools (an actuator locking tool and a timing chain retaining tool) are required to hold the timing chains in place and to lock the actuators in position during the procedure. Check with a dealer or auto parts store concerning availability and price of these tools prior to beginning this procedure. Remove the valve cover and paint an index mark on the chain and actuator for reassembly reference. Remove the timing chain guide bolts and guide. Install the actuator locking tool, and, using a 24 mm wrench on the hex of the cam shaft, rotate the camshaft clockwise until the actuator and tool align. Install the retainer bolts. Loosen the actuator bolt and remove the locking tool. Now remove the timing chain tensioner on the side of the actuator you are removing. Install the timing chain retaining tool on the side of the actuator you are removing. Be careful not to allow the actuator to move or rotate as you remove or install it. Remove the actuator retaining bolt, then remove the actuator as you carefully lift the timing chain from the actuator. Installation is the reverse of removal. Use a new actuator retaining bolt during reassembly.

Q:
How do you remove and install timing belt and Sprocket on V6 engine for Saturn LS and LS1? Posted by Customer
A:
Begin by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal and removing the timing belt cover. Set the engine to TDC for cylinder number one, then turn the crankshaft counter-clockwise until it's at 60 degrees before TDC, and remove the spark plugs. Install the crankshaft locking tool onto the crankshaft and rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the tool rests against the water pump pulley flange. This positions the engine at TDC number 1. Next, use special tools to lock the camshaft sprockets in place and loosen the timing belt tensioner, along with the upper and lower timing belt guide pulleys, to release belt tension. Remove the timing belt, and if necessary, the camshaft sprockets. Inspect the sprocket teeth, timing belt, camshaft endplay, and timing belt tensioner for wear or damage, replacing any worn parts. Inspect the water pump as well. Clean the timing belt area thoroughly and clean the sprocket teeth with lacquer thinner. Reinstall the timing belt sprockets if they were removed, ensuring their keys are intact. Verify the timing marks on the sprockets and remove the crankshaft locking tool. Depending on the engine type, follow either Engines before 578511 or Engines after 578512 instructions. For Engines before 578511, mark the timing belt guide pulleys' positions and install the timing belt over the camshaft sprockets, lower guide pulley, and crankshaft sprocket. Use a timing belt wedge to prevent movement. Install the timing belt around the tensioner, then the rear camshaft sprockets, and under the upper timing belt guide pulley. Adjust the pulleys' positions and tension the belt correctly. Recheck the alignment marks, remove the crankshaft locking tool, and rotate the engine to confirm alignment. Tighten the pulleys and torque the tensioner bolt. Recheck all alignment marks. Install the timing belt cover and reconnect the battery. For Engines after 578512, use special tools to check camshaft timing marks. Install the timing belt over the rear camshaft sprockets, tensioner, upper timing belt guide pulley, and the front camshaft sprockets. Use the timing belt gauge to align the marks. Install the camshaft sprocket locking tool if necessary. Rotate the camshafts and tension the belt properly. Remove the crankshaft locking tool, rotate the engine to verify alignment, and recheck the camshaft and crankshaft marks. Install the timing belt cover and reconnect the battery. The remaining installation steps are the reverse of removal.
