Installation is the reverse of removal.

Before diagnosing starter problems, ensure the battery is fully charged. If the starter motor doesn't turn when the switch is operated, check the shift lever (Neutral or Park for automatic transaxle) or depress the clutch pedal (manual transaxle). Verify the battery is charged, and clean and secure all cables at the battery and starter solenoid terminals. If the starter motor spins but the engine doesn't crank, the overrunning clutch in the starter motor is slipping, necessitating replacement. If the starter motor doesn't operate but the solenoid clicks when the switch is actuated, check the battery, main solenoid contacts, starter motor, or if the engine is seized. If the solenoid plunger can't be heard, the battery, fusible link, or the solenoid itself may be defective. To check the solenoid, connect a jumper lead between the battery (+) and the ignition switch wire terminal on the solenoid. If the starter motor operates, the solenoid is fine, and the issue is in the ignition switch, neutral start switch, or wiring. If the starter motor still doesn't operate, remove the starter/solenoid assembly for testing and repair. If the starter motor cranks the engine at an abnormally slow speed, check the charged battery and clean and tight terminal connections. Partial engine seizure or using the wrong viscosity oil may cause slow cranking. Disable the ignition system, connect a voltmeter to the battery posts, and crank the engine to check the voltage readings. A reading of 9 volts or more with normal cranking speed is normal, indicating a faulty motor if the cranking speed is slow. A reading below 9 volts with slow cranking may indicate burned solenoid contacts, a bad starter motor, discharged battery, or a bad connection.

If the starter motor spins but the engine does not crank, the overrunning clutch in the starter motor may be slipping, and you'll need to replace the motor.

To adjust the shim for the starter, follow these steps: Remove the flywheel housing cover and inspect the flywheel or drive plate for signs of unusual wear. Measure the clearance between the top of the flywheel ring gear tooth and the bottom of the pinion tooth on the starter using a wire-type feeler gauge (round diameter). Normal clearance should be 0.01 to 0.06 inches. If the starter clearance is less than 0.02 inches and the starter whines after engagement, add a 0.04 shim to gain clearance (avoid using more than two shims). If the starter clearance is more than 0.06 inches and the starter whines during engagement, remove a 0.04 shim to gain clearance (avoid removing more than two shims). To install a shim, loosen the inside bolt, remove the outer bolt, and slide the shim between the engine and the starter without removing the starter from the engine block.

It may be necessary to unbolt the mounts and raise the engine slightly.

If the starter motor spins but the engine does not crank, the overrunning clutch in the starter motor may be slipping, and you'll need to replace the motor.

If the solenoid plunger cannot be heard when the switch is actuated, it could indicate a bad battery, burned fusible link, or defective solenoid.
