On all GM cars, the fuel filter is located inside the fuel inlet to the carburetor and is made of pleated paper or bronze, depending on the model. It cannot be cleaned and reused. This job should be done with the engine cold and requires open-end wrenches to fit the fuel line nuts, a replacement filter, and clean rags. The air cleaner assembly should be removed, and the fuel hose traced from the fuel pump to the carburetor. Rags should be placed under the fuel inlet fittings to catch any fuel as the fittings are disconnected. The fuel line is then disconnected, and the fuel inlet filter nut unscrewed. The old filter is compared with the new one, and the new filter is installed. A new washer-type gasket is installed on the fuel inlet filter nut and tightened into the carburetor. The fuel line is then reconnected, and the engine started to check for leaks. If leaks are found, the fuel line connector is disconnected and checked for stripped or damaged threads. If necessary, thread sealing tape is used to wrap the connector threads. The air cleaner assembly is then reinstalled.
