Q:
How to Troubleshoot, Replace, and Maintain a Thermostat on GMC Savana? Posted by Customer
A:
Before assuming the thermostat is to blame for a cooling system problem, it is important to check the coolant level, drivebelt tension, and temperature gauge (or light) operation. If the engine seems to be taking a long time to warm up, indicating that the thermostat is stuck open, it should be replaced with a new one. To determine if the thermostat is stuck closed, causing the engine to run hot, you can check the temperature of the radiator hose that leads from the thermostat to the radiator. If the hose is not hot, but the engine is, it is likely that the thermostat is stuck closed and should be replaced. On the other hand, if the radiator hose is hot, it means that the coolant is flowing and the thermostat is open. When it comes to replacing the thermostat, the first step is to remove the air filter housing and air intake duct. The cooling system should be drained, and if the coolant is in good condition, it can be saved and reused. The coolant reservoir should also be removed. The location of the thermostat housing cover depends on the engine, and it should be removed along with the thermostat. If the large fitting that mates with the hose is deteriorated, the thermostat housing cover may need to be replaced. The old gasket material and/or sealant should be removed from the housing cover, and a new rubber seal should be installed over the thermostat. The new thermostat should be installed with the spring end directed into the engine. The housing cover should be reattached and tightened to the proper torque specifications. The hose should be reattached and the hose clamp should be tightened securely. All components that were removed for access should be installed, and the cooling system should be refilled. Finally, the engine should be started and allowed to reach normal operating temperature to check for leaks and proper thermostat operation.
