Q:
How do you remove the transaxle for Chevrolet Cobalt,HHR,Pontiac G5 and Saturn ION? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the transmission assembly, start by placing the vehicle in PARK with the parking brake engaged and disconnecting the negative battery cable. Then, label and unplug all transmission electrical connectors and remove any related brackets. Disconnect the shift cable from the shift lever at the transmission and remove the shift cable bracket from the rear powertrain mount. Disconnect the Output/Input Shaft Speed sensor and loosen the front wheel lug nuts and driveaxle/hub nuts. Remove the intake air duct and raise the vehicle, supporting it securely on jackstands. Drain the transmission fluid and remove both driveaxles. Remove the transmission oil cooler line assembly and support the engine from above using an engine hoist or support fixture. Remove the upper engine-to-transmission bolts and studs, disconnect the ABS wheel speed sensor at each front wheel, and remove the subframe. Support the transmission with a transmission jack and remove the bolts from the transmission-to-engine brace. Remove the starter and flywheel cover, and mark the relationship of the torque converter to the driveplate. Push the torque converter into the bell housing and remove the lower transmission-to-engine bolts. Mark the position of the driver's side powertrain mount bolts and remove them, along with the mount-to-transmission bolts and through-bolts on the front and rear mounts. Finally, ensure all wires, hoses, brackets, and mounts are disconnected and slide the transmission jack toward the side of the vehicle until the transmission is clear of the engine locating dowels, keeping it level throughout. To install the transmission assembly, follow the reverse of the removal procedure, ensuring the torque converter is properly engaged with the transmission and aligning the match marks on the torque converter and driveplate. Install all driveplate-to-torque converter bolts before tightening them, and tighten the transmission mounting bolts, driveaxle/hub nuts, and wheel lug nuts to the specified torque. Fill the transmission with the correct type and amount of automatic transmission fluid and shift the transmission into all gear positions to confirm shift cable adjustment, readjusting if necessary.
