Q:
How to remove and install Manual transmission? Posted by Customer
A:
To begin the removal process, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and then proceed to remove the shift lever, raising the vehicle and supporting it securely on jackstands. Drain the transmission lubricant and remove the driveshaft(s), covering the transmission end to prevent fluid loss and contamination. If the vehicle has 4WD, remove the transfer case, and if necessary, remove any parking brake assembly components that obstruct access. Remove exhaust system components for clearance. Unplug all wire harness connectors from the transmission and, depending on the model year, detach the clutch release cylinder or hydraulic line. On normal-duty (aluminum case) transmissions, remove the inspection cover. Take note of the wiring harness clips attached to the transmission and detach them. Support the engine and transmission separately, with the latter supported by a special jack. Remove the nuts from the crossmember bolts, raise the transmission slightly, and remove the crossmember. On heavy-duty (cast iron case) transmission models, remove the transmission-to-clutch housing bolts; on normal-duty models, remove the transmission-to-engine bolts. Ensure all wires are disconnected, and then move the transmission and jack toward the rear of the vehicle until the transmission input shaft is clear of the clutch or clutch housing. Lower the transmission, taking care not to depress the clutch pedal while it's out. Inspect the clutch components. For installation, if the clutch components were removed, install them, and for heavy-duty four-speed models, attach the clutch housing if it was removed. Carefully raise the transmission into position behind the engine or clutch housing, sliding it forward to engage the input shaft with the clutch plate hub. Avoid using excessive force; if the input shaft doesn't slide into place, adjust the transmission angle or the input shaft to ensure proper engagement. Once flush with the clutch housing or engine, install the transmission-to-engine or clutch housing bolts and tighten them. Install the crossmember and transmission mount securely, and then remove the jacks supporting the transmission and engine. Reinstall the various components removed earlier, including the transfer case if applicable, the driveshaft(s), and exhaust system components. Verify all wires and hoses are reconnected, ensure the transmission is filled with lubricant to the proper level, and lower the vehicle. Reinstall the shift lever, reconnect the negative battery cable, road test the vehicle, and check for leaks.
