The EGR system meters exhaust gases into the intake manifold through passages cast into the manifold or through external pipes connecting the exhaust manifold, the EGR valve and the intake manifold. Once inside the manifold, the exhaust gases merge with the air/fuel mixture. The dilution of the air/fuel mixture by exhaust gases lowers combustion chamber temperatures, reducing the level of oxides of nitrogen (NOx), a natural byproduct of high combustion temperatures. The amount of exhaust gases mixed with the air/fuel mixture is regulated by the PCM in response to engine operating conditions. The EGR valve is digital and under direct PCM control. This digital EGR valve meters exhaust gases into the intake manifold independently of intake manifold vacuum and can control the amount of exhaust gases more accurately than a vacuum-controlled EGR valve. Common engine problems associated with the EGR system include rough idling or stalling at idle, rough engine performance during light throttle application and stalling during deceleration. Special electronic diagnostic equipment is needed to check this valve and should be left to a dealer service department or other qualified repair facility. The EGR valve is located at the left end of the engine, behind the throttle body. To replace it, disconnect the electrical connector from the EGR valve, remove the two EGR valve mounting nuts, and remove the EGR valve. Installation is the reverse of removal.
