To remove and install the clockspring and steering wheel in a vehicle, start by parking the vehicle with the wheels pointing straight ahead and disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Disable the airbag system and remove the steering column covers. Then, remove the airbag module by inserting a thin round tool into the holes on the back of the steering wheel and gently pulling the module towards you. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the airbag module. Detach the clockspring wire harness from the steering wheel hub and disconnect the electrical connector for the steering wheel switches. Remove the steering wheel bolt from the steering shaft and lift the steering wheel off the shaft. For clockspring removal, remove the upper and lower steering column covers and the steering wheel. Depending on the model, remove the clockspring retaining screws and electrical connections, or detach the clockspring locking tabs and remove the clockspring from the steering column. Transfer the steering angle sensor to the replacement clockspring and perform the airbag clockspring centering procedure. Install the clockspring by reversing the removal procedure. To center the airbag clockspring, ensure the block tooth of the steering shaft is at the 6 o'clock position and slowly rotate the center section of the clockspring until it stops turning. Then, rotate it 2.5 turns in the opposite direction and visually check the centering window. Hold the coil center and align the clockspring with the steering column shaft and components before sliding it onto the steering shaft. When installing the clockspring, make sure the wheels are pointing straight ahead, the steering shaft is lined up in the 12 o'clock position, and the airbag clockspring is centered. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal, including aligning the index mark on the steering wheel hub with the mark on the shaft, applying thread locking compound to the steering wheel bolt, and enabling the airbag system.
