Q:
What is the purpose of the Canister Purge Valves and Vapor Canister on Chevrolet Tracker? Posted by Customer
A:
The evaporative emission (EVAP) control system is designed to prevent hydrocarbons from being released into the atmosphere by trapping and storing fuel vapor from the fuel tank, carburetor, or fuel injection system. The system includes a charcoal-filled canister, a two-way check valve (for fuel-injected models), the fuel tank filler cap, and the lines between the fuel tank and the rest of the system. Vapor trapped in the gas tank is vented through a line in the top of the tank and routed to a carbon canister located in the engine compartment (for non-ORVR vehicles) or under the vehicle (for ORVR vehicles) where it is stored until the engine is started. The canister outlet is connected to an electrically actuated vent solenoid valve in the carburetor (for carbureted models) or operates continually (for fuel-injected models). On 2001 models equipped with the On-Board Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR) system, the charcoal canister is located under the right side of the vehicle, just ahead of the fuel tank. The charcoal canister should be checked for loose, missing, cracked, or broken fittings, as well as cracks or other damage. The canister should not be washed. On carbureted models, the canister should be tested by blowing air into the ports and checking for proper air flow. On fuel-injected models, the canister should be tested by blowing air into the ports and checking for proper air flow. The vent solenoid valve on carbureted models should be checked by blowing air into the hose and ensuring that the air flows freely through the valve when the engine is off and does not pass through the valve when the engine is running. If the vent solenoid valve does not operate as described, it may be defective or there may be a problem with the electrical circuit or ECM. The EVAP canister purge valve on fuel-injected models should be located between the charcoal canister and the intake manifold. The electrical connector should be unplugged and the resistance between the terminals should be measured. The purge valve should also be tested by blowing air into the pipes and checking for proper air flow. If the canister purge valve does not operate as described, it should be replaced. When replacing components, the hoses and fittings should be labeled, and the component should be detached and removed. Installation is the reverse of removal.
