Q:
How to remove and install timing chain and Cam Gear on Cadillac ElDorado and Fleetwood? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove and install the timing chain and sprockets for 4.5L and 4.9L engines, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and removing the front cover. Take off the oil slinger from the crankshaft and rotate the engine to align the sprocket timing marks, ensuring the No. 1 cylinder is on the TDC of its compression stroke. From the camshaft, remove the camshaft thrust button and screw, and discard the thrust button. Slide out the camshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket, and timing chain as an assembly. To install, clean the gasket mounting surfaces and inspect all parts for wear or damage, replacing as necessary. Assemble the timing chain on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets, align the timing marks on the sprockets to face each other, and align the dowel pin in the camshaft with the index hole in the sprocket. Slide the assembly onto the camshaft and crankshaft, and install the camshaft sprocket-to-camshaft bolts. Tighten the camshaft sprocket-to-camshaft bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Install the new thrust button and the oil slinger on the crankshaft, followed by the front cover. Finally, connect the negative battery cable, refill the cooling system, start the engine, allow it to reach normal operating temperatures, and check for leaks. For the 4.6L engine, specifically the camshaft primary and secondary drive chains, removing the engine assembly and putting it on an engine stand or removing the powertrain assembly is necessary. Remove the serpentine drive belt, idler pulley, belt tensioner, front cover, and oil pump. Then, remove the cam covers and the three timing chain tensioners. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts from all four camshafts and remove the sprockets. Remove the secondary drive chains from around the intermediate shaft sprocket, and remove the one bolt holding the intermediate shaft sprocket. Slide the cam gear and primary drive chain off the crankshaft and intermediate shaft. The intermediate shaft need not be removed unless there is evident wear. To install, retime the camshafts, install the oil pump and cam covers, and reinstall the serpentine drive belt, idler pulley, and belt tensioner. Finally, install the engine assembly or powertrain assembly.
