Q:
How do you remove the Ignition Coil on Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix? Posted by Customer
A:
On L4 engines. remove the distributor cap. On L4 engines, label the spark plug wires as to their position on the cap and remove them. On V6 engines, remove the spark plug wire retaining ring from the top of the distributor. Remove the coil cover from the distributor cap. Note the position of each wire, duly marking them if necessary. Remove the coil ground wires then push the leads from the underside of the connectors. Remove the coil from the distributor cap. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, but ensure that the leads are connected to their original positions. Damage to the control module and ignition coil can result if the leads are connected incorrectly.

Q:
How to remove and install ignition coils in different types of ignition systems for Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
A:
For High Energy Ignition (HEI) systems in 1994 and earlier models, begin by disconnecting the battery's negative terminal. If your model has a separately mounted coil, unplug the coil's high tension wire and both electrical leads, then remove the coil by taking off both mounting nuts. On models with the coil in the distributor cap, remove the coil cover screws and lift off the cover, or simply push the coil electrical leads through the top of the hood and remove the coil by taking out the mounting screws. To test the coil, measure the primary resistance between the TACH and BAT terminals, which should be nearly zero; if it's higher, replace the coil. Measure the secondary resistance between the distributor cap rotor button and the TACH terminal and then between the rotor button and the BAT terminal, both of which should not indicate infinite resistance; if they do, replace the coil. For models with a separately mounted coil, perform various ohmmeter tests to check for opens and grounds, and replace the coil if needed. To install the coil, follow the reverse removal procedure. For Enhanced Distributor Ignition (EDI) systems in 1995 and later models, you can check the coil without removing it from the engine by first removing the engine cover and air cleaner assembly, then detaching the primary electrical connector from the ignition coil. Use a voltmeter or test light to ensure the coil receives battery voltage with the ignition key ON; if not, check fuses and wiring. Measure the coil resistances with an ohmmeter and replace the coil if any checks fail. To remove the coil, disconnect the battery's negative terminal, remove the engine cover and air cleaner assembly, detach the electrical connectors from the ignition coil, disconnect the coil's secondary wire leading to the distributor, and unbolt the studs securing the coil to the intake manifold. If replacing the coil, remove the old coil from the bracket using a drill and punch. For new coil installation, attach it to the bracket and secure the assembly onto the manifold with the studs before proceeding with the remaining installation steps in reverse order.

Q:
What does it indicate if the ohmmeter does not show infinite resistance during the first test for the 1992 Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
A:
If the ohmmeter does not show infinite resistance during the first test, it indicates that the pick-up coil is defective and must be replaced.

Q:
How to replace the Ignition Coil for Chevrolet C1500 and K1500? Posted by Customer
A:
To disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, first detach the coil high tension lead and primary wire connector if not already done. Then, remove the mounting fasteners to separate the coil from the engine. For 1996 through 2000 models, disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition coil and ignition control module, and detach the coil wire from the high-tension terminal. Remove the ignition coil/module bracket mounting bolts and take out the assembly from the engine. On a workbench, drill out the center of the rivets retaining the coil to the bracket, punch out the rivets, and remove the coil from the bracket. Attach the ignition coil to the bracket using new screws and install the ignition module to the bracket. Finally, place the assembly back on the engine and connect the electrical connectors and coil wire.

Q:
How to remove and install a distributor and pick-up coil for Chevrolet C1500 and K1500? Posted by Customer
A:
Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Caution: On models equipped with the Theftlock audio system, be sure the lockout feature is turned off before performing any procedure which requires disconnecting the battery. Remove the distributor cap and rotor. Remove the distributor from the engine. Detach the ignition coil leads from the module. Mark the distributor shaft and gear so they can be reassembled in the same relationship. Carefully mount the distributor in a vise equipped with soft jaws and, using a hammer and punch, remove the roll pin from the distributor shaft and gear. Pull out the distributor shaft. To remove the ignition coil, mount the distributor shaft in a vise equipped with soft jaws and, using a pin punch and hammer, knock out the roll pin. Remove the driven gear and spacer washers or springs from the end of the shaft-be sure to note their installed order. Remove the shaft from the distributor. To detach the ignition coil, remove the retaining clip. Lift the ignition coil assembly straight up and detach it from the distributor. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Q:
How to remove and install an ignition coil for Pontiac Fiero? Posted by Customer
A:
Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Unplug the coil high tension wire and both electrical leads from the coil. Remove both mounting nuts and remove the coil from the engine. Check the coil for opens and grounds by performing the following three tests with an ohmmeter. These three resistance checks will determine whether your separately mounted coil is good or bad. Using the ohmmeter's high scale, hook up the ohmmeter leads as shown. The ohmmeter should indicate a very high, or infinite, resistance value. If it doesn't, replace the coil. Using the low scale, hook up the leads as shown. The ohmmeter should indicate a very low, or zero resistance value. If it doesn't, replace the coil. Using the high scale, hook up the leads. The ohmmeter should not indicate an infinite resistance. If it does, replace the coil. Installation of the new or old coil is the reverse of the removal procedure. Remove the distributor. Turn the four latches and remove the cap and coil assembly from the lower housing. Connect an ohmmeter to both terminals of the cap coil assembly. The reading should be zero, or nearly zero. If it isn't, replace the coil. Connect the ohmmeter between each of the terminals of the coil assembly and the center contact of the cap. Use the high scale on the ohmmeter. Replace the coil only if both readings are infinite. Remove the coil cover attaching screws and lift off the cover. Remove the ignition coil mounting screws and lift the coil; with the leads, from the cap. Remove the ignition coil arc seal. Clean with a soft cloth and inspect the cap for defects. Replace if necessary. Assemble the new coil and cover in the cap. Install the distributor cap. Install the distributor in the engine.
