Q:
How to remove and replace an air conditioning compressor? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove and replace an air conditioning compressor, you must first have the air conditioning system discharged by a professional and make sure to obtain the oil totals that were removed during the discharge process, as this information is necessary for the replacement. After discharging the system, proceed with the removal by loosening the right front wheel lug nuts, raising the vehicle on jackstands, and removing the wheel and inner fender splash shield. For 1.5L engines, you also need to remove the air filter housing inlet hose. Remove the heat shield and electrical connectors from the compressor, disconnect the compressor refrigerant line fitting, and plug all open lines and fittings to prevent contamination. Remove the electrical connector bracket, upper mounting nut and stud, and the lower mounting bolts to lower the compressor. If needed, remove the compressor mounting bracket. For installation, ensure the oil in the compressor is balanced, and if you're using a new compressor, follow the directions regarding excess oil draining. Transfer the clutch from the old compressor to the new one if the replacement compressor lacks a clutch. Replace all old O-rings with new ones lubricated with compatible refrigerant oil before connecting the refrigerant line fitting. Raise the compressor into position using a floor jack and tighten the mounting bolts to the specified torque. Complete the installation by following the reverse of the removal steps, and finally, have the system evacuated, recharged, and leak-tested by a professional technician. For oil balancing, with the old compressor removed, remove the compressor drain plug and allow the oil to drain into a graduated container, ensuring all oil is drained. Record the amount drained and add it to the amount measured during refrigerant recovery. If the total oil amount is less than the oil volume in the replacement compressor, no further balancing is needed, and you can proceed with refilling the replacement compressor with the measured oil. However, if the total oil amount exceeds the replacement compressor's oil volume, you must add the additional required oil to the replacement compressor before installation. Once the additional oil is added, continue with the installation process.
