Before proceeding with the removal of the air conditioning system, it is important to have it discharged. For ION and Cobalt/GS models, the vehicle should be raised and securely supported on jackstands, and the cable from the negative battery terminal should be disconnected. The refrigerant inlet and outlet lines should then be disconnected from the condenser, followed by the removal of the lower condenser-to-radiator bolts. The condenser can be pulled downward to release it from the clips at the upper part of the radiator, and then lowered from the engine compartment. If the same condenser is going to be reinstalled, the lines should be plugged and the condenser stored with the line fittings facing up to prevent oil drainage. If a new condenser is being installed, 0.75 ounces of refrigerant oil of the correct type should be poured into it prior to installation, or the same amount of oil as the old condenser if it had more than 0.75 ounces. For HHR models, the cable from the negative battery terminal should be disconnected, followed by the removal of the air cleaner/engine cover assembly and the hood latch. The radiator support brackets and the radiator cover should then be removed, and the refrigerant inlet and outlet lines should be disconnected from the condenser. The condenser can be lifted up and out, and the stone guard unclipped from it. Before reconnecting the refrigerant lines to the condenser, new O-rings should be coated with refrigerant oil, installed in the refrigerant line fittings, and the condenser inlet and outlet nuts should be tightened to the proper torque specifications. The installation process is the reverse of removal, and it is important to have the system evacuated, recharged, and leak tested.
