The catalytic converter is an emission control device that reduces pollutants in the exhaust gas stream. There are two types of converters: the conventional oxidation catalyst and the three-way catalyst. The test equipment for a catalytic converter is expensive and sophisticated, so it is best to take your vehicle to a dealer or authorized emissions inspection facility for diagnosis and repair if you suspect a malfunction. When servicing underbody components, it is important to check the converter for leaks, corrosion, dents, and other damage. Pay attention to the welds/flange bolts that attach the front and rear ends of the converter to the exhaust system and replace the converter if any damage is found. While catalytic converters don't break often, they can become plugged. To check for a restricted converter, use a vacuum gauge to diagnose the effect of a blocked exhaust on the intake vacuum. Connect the vacuum gauge to an intake manifold vacuum source, warm the engine to operating temperature, and note the vacuum readings at idle and after opening and closing the throttle. If the reading after the fourth test is significantly lower than the idle reading, the exhaust system may be restricted. When replacing the catalytic converter, spray the nuts on the exhaust flange studs before removing them. Remove the nuts and separate the converter from the exhaust manifold, cutting off the rear of the converter if necessary. Weld in a new converter and install new gaskets where required.
