To remove the timing chain, temporarily install the crankshaft pulley hub and bolt, align the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets, push back the timing chain tensioner and insert a pin to retain it, use a prybar to hold the engine while removing the camshaft bolt, and carefully pry off the camshaft sprocket. Inspect the timing chain and sprockets for wear and damage. If necessary, replace them. To install the new timing chain, mesh it with the camshaft sprocket and engage it with the crankshaft sprocket, align the timing marks, install and tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt, release the tensioner, lubricate the chain and sprocket, rotate the engine to check the alignment of the timing marks, apply RTV sealant to the oil pan sealing surface, and finally, install the Timing Cover using a new rubber seal.

To remove and install the Timing Cover, first, disconnect the negative battery cable. For removal, remove the upper and lower fan shrouds, drive belt, cooling fan, and water pump. Position the number four piston at TDC on the compression stroke, remove the drive belt pulley and the crankshaft damper. Be sure to remove the crankshaft position sensor and the wiring harness nut if applicable. Loosen the front oil pan nuts, then proceed to remove the cover bolts, separating the Timing Cover from the block, breaking the gasket seal if necessary. Note that for some engines, the front cover may be made of composite material and should be replaced rather than resealed. Remove the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring just inside the front cover, and remove the camshaft sprocket and chain assembly. When installing, use a gasket scraper to remove old gasket material and sealant, clean the cover and block sealing surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone, and check the cover flange for distortion. Ensure proper alignment of the crankshaft sprocket with the Woodruff key and the balance shaft gears. Lubricate the chain with clean engine oil, apply Loctite to the camshaft sprocket bolt threads, and install and tighten them. Check the oil pan-to-block joints and apply RTV sealant to the U-shaped channel on the bottom of the cover. Apply a thin layer of RTV sealant to both sides of the new gasket and position it on the engine block, securing it with dowel pins. Install the Timing Cover and tighten the bolts, considering whether the oil pan needs to be removed or pried down for access. Finally, lubricate the oil seal contact surface of the vibration damper hub with moly-base grease or clean engine oil, install the damper on the crankshaft, and follow the remaining installation steps, including using a new O-ring for the crankshaft position sensor.

For vehicles manufactured in 1995 and later, V6 and small block VB models come equipped with a non-reusable plastic front cover; once removed, it must be discarded to prevent potential oil leaks. However, in the case of 1996 and later 7.4L V8 engines, they feature a reusable front cover gasket and front cover, with gasket replacement recommended only if the original gasket is damaged. The removal process begins with the water pump, followed by the separation of the crankshaft drivebelt pulley from the vibration damper by removing its bolts. Most engines employ a large bolt threaded into the crankshaft's nose to secure the vibration damper, necessitating its removal with a puller that exerts force solely on the damper hub, avoiding damage. On certain V6 and small block V8 engines, removal of the timing cover may require loosening and lowering the oil pan, potentially necessitating a new gasket if it breaks during the process. Accessories obstructing access to the timing chain cover should be detached and moved aside, while on big block engines, additional steps involve cutting the oil pan gasket and removing the cover. For 1995 and later models, removing the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring is recommended, and for 7.4L engines, a specialized tool is required for its removal, after which it should be replaced. The timing chain's free play should be measured, and if it exceeds 5/8 inch, replacement is recommended alongside the gears. Following this, the camshaft sprocket and chain are removed as a unit, with alignment crucial, especially for V6 and small block V8 engines where the oil pan gasket should be checked and replaced if deteriorated. Gasket removal and surface cleaning are critical, with cover flange checks and corrections if needed.
