Frequent oil changes are crucial for preventive maintenance, as aging engine oil becomes diluted and contaminated, leading to premature engine wear. It's recommended to install a new oil filter every time the oil is changed. Before starting the procedure, gather necessary tools (drain pan, rubber gloves, breaker bar, socket, and filter wrench), clean rags, and newspapers to manage spills. Ensure the vehicle is safely supported for access to the oil drain plug and filter. Warm the engine to facilitate oil drainage. Raise the vehicle and position the drain pan beneath the drain plug. Using a wrench, carefully remove the drain plug, allowing the old oil to drain. After draining, wipe the plug, clean the area, and reinstall the plug securely. Position the drain pan under the oil filter, use a filter wrench to remove the old filter, and empty it. Compare the old and new filters to ensure they match, clean the filter mounting area, and lubricate the new filter's gasket with clean oil before attaching it, following the manufacturer's tightening instructions. Lower the vehicle and pour fresh oil into the engine through the filler opening, using a funnel. After adding four quarts of oil, check the level on the dipstick, start the engine briefly, and recheck for leaks and oil level. Dispose of the old oil properly, as it cannot be reused.
