About every six months, it is important to inspect the flexible hoses that connect the steel brake line with the rear brakes and front calipers for cracks, chafing of the outer cover, leaks, blisters, and other damage. A thorough check can be done using a light and mirror. If any of these conditions are found, the hose should be replaced with a new one. When replacing steel line, it is crucial to use double-walled steel tubing and not substitute it with copper tubing, as copper is prone to fatigue cracking and corrosion. The sizing of the tubing is based on its outside diameter. Pre-fabricated brake line sections can be obtained from auto parts stores or brake supply houses, which can be bent by hand or in a tubing bender depending on the type of tubing used. If pre-fabricated lengths are not available, the recommended steel tubing and fitting nuts should be obtained to match the line to be replaced. The correct length can be determined by measuring the old brake line section and cutting the new tubing accordingly, leaving about ½-inch extra for flaring the ends. The fittings should be installed onto the cut tubing and the ends should be flared using an ISO flaring tool. The tubing should then be bent to match the shape of the old brake line using a tubing bender. If the necessary equipment is not available, a local auto parts store can usually assist with tube flaring and bending. When installing the brake line, it is important to leave at least 19 mm (0.75 in) clearance between the line and any moving or vibrating parts.
