Q:
How to check the fuel system and fuel pump in a Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe? Posted by Customer
A:
Check that there is enough fuel in the tank and verify that the fuel pump runs by listening for a whirring noise when the ignition switch is turned on. If there is no response from the fuel pump, check the electrical circuit. To perform a fuel pressure check, relieve the fuel system pressure and remove the fuel line. Turn on the ignition and check the pressure on the gauge. If the pressure is not within specifications, check the fuel pressure regulator or other potential causes. After five minutes, the pressure should not drop below the minimum hold pressure. If it does, there may be a leaking fuel injector or a faulty fuel pump or pressure regulator. If the fuel pump does not turn on, check the EFI fuse and the wiring from the fuse/relay box to the fuel pump.

Q:
How to disassemble and replace the fuel pump/sending unit in a Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe? Posted by Customer
A:
Check on the availability of parts before disassembling the unit. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Remove the fuel tank cap. Remove the rear seat from inside the passenger compartment. Remove the fuel pump/sending unit access cover. Unplug the electrical connectors, then disconnect the fuel lines. On 2003 and 2004 models, remove the fuel pump/sending unit retaining screws and remove the mounting flange. In 2005 and later models, the fuel pump assembly is retained in the tank by a large screw-on ring. A special tool is available which makes loosening and tightening this ring very easy, but a large pair of water pump pliers will work. Carefully withdraw the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit assembly from the fuel tank. The components of the fuel pump assembly are modular and all attach to the main housing. Remove the plastic support on the bottom of the pump by releasing the clips with a screwdriver, the pull off the rubber isolator, the fuel sock filter clip, then the electrical connector. Withdraw the pump from the housing. Inspect the strainer for contamination. If it is dirty, replace it. Reassemble the fuel pump/sending unit in the reverse order of disassembly. Install the fuel pump/sending unit assembly in the fuel tank. When installing the fuel pump assembly locking ring 2005 and later models, the raised rib on the ring should align between the two triangle marks on the tank, and the four prongs should be in their notches. Connect the fuel line and electrical connectors. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
