Q:
How do you remove and install a Fuel Pump on Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
A:
The mechanical pump for carburetor equipped models is a sealed unit that cannot be rebuilt. It is located on the right side of the engine at the front. To remove the pump, first disconnect the negative battery cable to isolate the battery. Then, detach the fuel inlet hose, outlet line, and vapor return hose (if present). Remove the two mounting bolts and detach the fuel pump, being careful to retrieve the pushrod. Remove the gasket and mounting plate, and clean the block mounting surface. Apply grease to hold the pushrod in place during installation. Position the new gasket, mounting plate, and pump on the block, and tighten the bolts securely. Reattach the inlet hose, outlet line, and vapor return hose, ensuring they are tightened properly. Finally, start the engine and check for fuel leaks at the hose and line connections. For electric pumps in fuel injected models, perform the fuel pressure relief procedure and disconnect the battery cable. Remove the fuel tank and match-mark the fuel pump/sending unit assembly to reinstall it correctly. The assembly is secured to the fuel tank with a cam lock ring or snap-ring, depending on the model. Carefully withdraw the assembly from the fuel tank, taking care not to damage the float arm. Inspect and replace the rubber gasket or O-ring if necessary. Inspect and replace the fuel strainer if damaged or clogged. If replacing the fuel pump, disassemble the assembly and install the new pump according to the manufacturer's instructions. Install the fuel pump/sending unit assembly into the fuel tank, aligning the match-marks. Finally, install the cam lock ring or snap-ring and reinstall the fuel tank.

Q:
How to check fuel pump and fuel pressure for Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
A:
When dealing with fuel system maintenance, it's advisable to take certain precautions. Start by relieving fuel pressure, and to prevent fuel leakage, it's a good practice to place a shop towel over any fuel line connections that need to be disassembled. Begin the preliminary inspection by ensuring there is fuel in the tank and examining the fuel lines, hoses, and connections for leaks or obstructions while the engine is running. For carbureted and TBI engines, a pressure gauge, requiring an adapter set, is used to perform a fuel pressure check. After performing the fuel pressure relief procedure, disconnect the fuel supply line from the throttle body for carbureted and TBI engines, and for CMFI and CSFI engines, install a pressure gauge with a bleeder hose onto the Schrader valve on the fuel supply line. Depending on the engine type, start the engine to assess fuel pressure. If pressure is too low, conduct a fuel pump volume check, and if volume is insufficient, inspect for fuel line restrictions. If no restrictions are found, replace the fuel pump. Additionally, perform an electrical circuit check for TBI, CMFI, and CSFI engines by verifying power to the fuel pump relay and the presence of power at the fuel pump connector. If power is absent, investigate wiring issues or a faulty relay. To check the oil pressure switch, start the engine and remove the fuel pump relay; if the engine stops, it indicates a problem with the oil pressure switch or wiring.
