What steps are involved in removing the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit module for the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit module, you need to remove the fuel tank and disconnect the EVAP vent line, fuel tank vent line fitting, and fuel supply line quick-connect fittings from the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit mounting flange. Then, using water pump pliers, unscrew the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit module lock ring and remove the pump assembly, taking care not to damage the fuel level sensor float arm and float.

Q:
How to check the operation of the fuel pump? Posted by Customer
A:
To check the operation of the fuel pump, sit inside the vehicle with the windows closed and turn the ignition key to ON. Listen for the sound of the fuel pump as it's briefly turned on by the PCM to pressurize the fuel system prior to starting the engine. If you can't hear the pump, remove the fuel filler cap and have an assistant turn the ignition switch to ON while you listen for the sound of the pump operating. If the pump does not come on, check the fuel pump fuse and relay, wiring back to the fuel pump, and if necessary, replace the fuel pump. To measure the fuel pressure, connect a fuel pressure gauge to the Schrader valve-type test port on the fuel feed line and start the engine. Note the gauge reading as soon as the pressure stabilizes and compare it with the pressure specifications. If the pressure is lower than specified, suspect a restricted fuel filter or check the fuel lines and hoses for kinks, blockages, and leaks. If the regulator is stuck in the open position, which will prevent the fuel system from reaching its normal operating pressure range, replace the fuel pump module.
