Q:
How to check fuel pump operation and fuel pressure? Posted by Customer
A:
To begin with a preliminary check, ensure there are no fuel line leaks and that there is an adequate fuel supply in the tank. Have an assistant turn the ignition switch to the ON position while listening for the fuel pump's whirring sound, indicating its operation; if no sound is heard, inspect the fuel pump fuse and relay and check the control circuit to the PCM. If there's still no pump operation, disconnect the fuel pump module's electrical connector and test for power and ground. If power or ground is absent, repair the wiring. If power is present and the pump doesn't run, replace the fuel pump. For a pressure check, use a fuel pressure gauge, relieving fuel pressure first. Attach the gauge to the test port and cycle the ignition key to note the pressure reading, repeating as needed for the highest reading. For 2004 and 2005 models, if pressure is low, install a fuel shut-off valve and close it; if high, check the return line for restrictions, and if none are found, replace the fuel pressure regulator. While the engine is running, the fuel pressure should be 3 to 10 psi below the initial reading; if not, check for vacuum at the fuel pressure regulator, and if it's present but the regulator doesn't reduce pressure, replace it. For 2006 and later models, check pressure while the engine is running and follow similar troubleshooting steps. Finally, monitor the fuel pressure for five minutes after shutting off the engine, ensuring it doesn't drop more than 5 psi; if it does, there may be a leak in the fuel line, a leaking fuel injector, or issues with the pressure regulator or fuel pump module check valve, which can be checked for internal leaks by disconnecting the vacuum line and inspecting for fuel presence.
