Q:
How to remove and reinstall the orifice tube in the air conditioning system of Cadillac DeVille and DTS? Posted by Customer
A:
For 1999 models (except Seville), the air conditioning system needs to be discharged and the refrigerant recovered before proceeding. The refrigerant high-pressure line should be disconnected using two wrenches to avoid twisting the lines. The orifice tube, which is located in the high-pressure line near the cowl and just ahead of the evaporator, can be found at the fitting junction next to the orifice location. The orifice tube is a tube with a fixed-diameter orifice and mesh filters at each end. It can be removed using needle-nose pliers. The orifice tube acts as a meter for the refrigerant, changing it from a high-pressure liquid to a low-pressure liquid/vapor mixture. It can be reused if the screens are not plugged with grit or foreign material, neither screen is torn, the plastic housing over the screens is intact, and the brass orifice inside the plastic housing is unrestricted. Installation is the reverse of removal, with the shorter end of the expansion tube inserted first towards the evaporator. The fitting and refrigerant line should be retightened, and then the system should be evacuated, recharged, and leak-tested. For 1999 Seville and 2000-2005 models, the air conditioning system also needs to be discharged and the refrigerant recovered. Working near the accumulator, the air conditioning lines should be disconnected using two wrenches. The flared tubing should be separated from the line. The orifice tube, which is a tube with a fixed-diameter orifice and mesh filters at each end, can be found inside the pipe leading to the evaporator when the pipe is separated at the filling. Needle-nose pliers can be used to remove the orifice tube.
