Grasp the water pump pulley and attempt to move it up and down or from side to side.

To remove the water pump, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. On 1995 and earlier models, remove the hood latch mechanism. Drain the coolant from the radiator and, on 1996 and later models, remove the air cleaner assembly and intake duct. Detach any hoses or wiring attached to the upper fan shroud and remove the upper fan shroud. Remove the drivebelt(s) and disconnect the hoses from the water pump, cutting them if necessary. Remove the engine cooling fan and clutch, as well as any brackets necessary for access. Remove the water pump-to-engine block bolts and tap the pump with a soft-faced hammer if it is stuck. For installation, use a gasket scraper to remove old gasket material and clean the mating surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone. Coat both sides of the gasket(s) with RTV sealant and place it onto the water pump. Coat the threads of each water pump mounting bolt with RTV sealant and insert them into the pump. Tighten the bolts in a criss-cross pattern to the specified torque. The remaining steps are the reverse of removal. Refill the cooling system, run the engine, and check for leaks.

A thin layer of RTV sealant should be applied to both sides of the new gasket before installing it on the water pump.

Excessive bearing wear can be identified by attempting to move the water pump pulley horizontally or vertically. If there is movement, the bearing is nearing the end of its service life and replacement is required.

Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Drain the coolant. Loosen the fan pulley nuts/bolts and remove the drivebelt. Loosen the hose clamps for the lower radiator hose and disconnect the hose from the water pump. On 7.4L VB models, disconnect the coolant bypass hose from the water pump. Remove the fan assembly and water pump pulley. Remove all brackets that attach to the water pump. Loosen the components so that the brackets can be moved aside and the water pump bolts removed. Remove the mounting bolts from the water pump and detach it from the block. Grasp the water pump and rock it back and forth to break the gasket seal. Installation: Clean the sealing surfaces on both the block and the water pump. Wipe the mating surfaces with a rag saturated with lacquer thinner or acetone. Apply a thin layer of RTV sealant to the block mounting surfaces and install new water pump gaskets. Apply a thin layer of RTV sealant to the water pump mounting surfaces. Place the water pump in position and install the bolts and studs finger-tight. Work carefully so the gaskets don't slip out of position. Remember to replace any mounting brackets secured by the water pump mounting bolts. Install the water pump pulley and fan assembly and tighten the pulley nuts by hand. Install the lower radiator hose, heater hose, and hose clamps. Tighten the hose clamps securely. Install the drivebelt and tighten the fan mounting nuts securely. Add coolant to the specified level. Connect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery. Start the engine and check the water pump and hoses for leaks.

There are three ways to check the water pump's operation while it is installed on the engine.

Bleed the cooling system of any air.

The water pump should be placed in position and the bolts should be tightened to the specified torque during installation.

The steps involved in removing and installing a water pump on a V6 or V8 model are as follows: 1. Disconnect the battery cable. 2. Drain the coolant. 3. Remove the air intake duct and resonator assembly. 4. Remove the drivebelt. 5. Remove the water pump pulley. 6. Remove the radiator hoses and expansion tank hose (V6) or water pump inlet and outlet hoses (V8). 7. Unbolt the water pump. 8. Remove all traces of the old gasket seal from the mounting surface on the engine and water pump.
