If the pulley can be moved in either direction, it indicates that the bearing is nearing the end of its service life and the water pump should be replaced.

Unbolt the water pump, tapping it with a soft-lace hammer if necessary to break the gasket seal. Inspect the pump's impeller blades for corrosion and replace the pump if needed. To install the new water pump, clean the sealing surfaces of all gasket material on both the pump and block. Apply a thin layer of RTV sealant to both sides of the new gasket and install it on the water pump. Place the water pump in position and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. The rest of the installation procedure is the reverse of the removal. Finally, add coolant to the specified level, start the engine, and check for leaks in the water pump and hoses. Bleed the cooling system of any air.

Finally, remove the water pump-to-engine bolts and the pump. To install the new water pump, clean the gasket mounting surfaces and place a new gasket over the water pump studs. Install the water pump and tighten the bolts according to the specified torque values. Install the water pump pulley and tighten the bolts. Reinstall the cross brace, coolant recovery tank, air filter assembly, and negative battery cable. Fill the cooling system with coolant and check for leaks. For the 4.6L engine, the process is similar but with some additional steps. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the engine coolant. Remove the air cleaner assembly, water pump drive belt, lower radiator hose from the thermostat housing, and water pump bypass hose from the coolant crossover assembly. Remove the water pump cover and use a water pump removal tool to remove the water pump from the housing. Clean the mating surfaces and install a new O-ring in the coolant crossover housing. Install the new water pump and lock it into place. Install a new O-ring in the water pump cover and install the cover, tightening the bolts. Finally, reinstall all the engine components in the reverse order of removal and refill the cooling system.

Place the water pump in position and install the bolts and studs finger-tight. Work carefully so the gaskets don't slip out of position. Remember to replace any mounting brackets secured by the water pump mounting bolts. Install the water pump pulley and fan assembly and tighten the pulley nuts by hand. Install the lower radiator hose, heater hose, and hose clamps. Tighten the hose clamps securely. Install the drive belt and tighten the fan mounting nuts securely. Add coolant to the specified level in the cooling system. Connect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery. Start the engine and check the water pump and hoses for any signs of leaks.

If the weep hole is leaking, the water pump should be replaced immediately.

Excessive bearing wear can be identified by attempting to move the water pump pulley horizontally or vertically. If there is movement, the bearing is nearing the end of its service life and replacement is required.

After installing the new water pump, you should perform the reverse of the removal process.

In most cases, it will be necessary to use a flashlight from under the model to see evidence of leakage from the weep holes on the pump body.

Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Drain the cooling system. On models with multiple V-belts, mark the accessory drive belts with white paint to simplify installation. On models with an engine-driven fan, remove the upper fan shroud. On models with multiple V-belts, remove the accessory drive belts by loosening the pivot and adjusting bolts and pushing the accessory toward the engine. On models with a single serpentine belt, rotate the belt tensioner pulley away from the belt to release the tension on the belt, remove the belt, and release the tensioner. On some engines, it may be necessary to remove one or more accessories to gain access to the water pump. Remove the bolts retaining the fan to the fan pulley hub, then separate the fan and pulley hub from the water pump. Disconnect the heater and lower radiator hoses from the water pump. Remove the water pump mounting bolts and separate the water pump from the engine. Prior to installing the water pump, remove all old gasket material and sealant from the gasket sealing surfaces. Clean the threaded holes in the block as well. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. If a new water pump is being installed, transfer the heater hose fitting from the old pump to the new one. On L4 engines, use a new gasket or RTV type sealant when installing the pump. On V6 and VB engines, use a new gasket when installing the pump. Tighten the bolts to the specified torque after coating the threads with RTV sealant to prevent leaks. Adjust all drive belts. Connect the negative battery cable and fill the radiator with a mixture of antifreeze and water. Start the engine and allow it to idle until the upper radiator hose gets hot. Check for leaks. With the engine hot, fill the radiator with more coolant mixture until the level is at the bottom of the filler neck. Install the radiator cap and check the coolant level periodically during the first few miles of driving.

After disconnecting the battery cable, you should drain the coolant.
