Clean the sealing surfaces of the water pump and block of all gasket material, and wipe the mating surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone. Apply a thin layer of RTV sealant to both sides of the new gasket, and install the gasket on the water pump.

Water pump failure can lead to overheating and serious engine damage. There are several ways to check the operation of the water pump while it is installed on the engine. If any of these checks indicate problems with the water pump, it should be replaced immediately. One indication of a problem is a leak from the weep hole in the water pump snout, which indicates a failed seal. Another sign is a high-pitched squealing sound coming from the water pump, which indicates a failed shaft bearing. Excessive bearing wear can be identified by attempting to move the water pump pulley horizontally or vertically. Additionally, the effectiveness of the water pump can be checked by removing it for examination, as the impeller fins may corrode away. To remove the water pump, the battery cable must be disconnected, the coolant drained, and the air filter duct and radiator shroud and fan/clutch assembly removed. The drivebelt and coolant hoses connected to the pump must also be disconnected. On inline engines, the water pump pulley must be removed. The water pump can then be unbolted, and if necessary, tapped with a soft-face hammer to break the gasket seal. The pump's impeller blades should be inspected for corrosion, and if any fins are missing or badly corroded, the pump should be replaced. The sealing surfaces of the water pump and block should be cleaned of all gasket material, and the mating surfaces should be wiped with a rag saturated with lacquer thinner or acetone. To install the new water pump, a thin layer of RTV sealant should be applied to both sides of the new gasket, and the gasket should be installed on the water pump. The water pump can then be placed in position and the bolts tightened to the specified torque. The pulley should be installed and the bolts tightened to the specified torque. The remainder of the installation process is the reverse of removal. Coolant should be added to the specified level, the engine should be started, and the coolant level should be checked. The cooling system should be bled, and coolant leaks around the water pump and hoses should be checked for.
