The manufacturer may have installed a thin plate between the disc and the hub flange to correct disc runout. Before removing the plate, mark the stud that the V-notch points to. If the disc needs to be machined or replaced, check the runout with the plate and disc installed. If there is excessive runout, remove the plate and check again. To begin the inspection, loosen the lug nuts, raise and secure the vehicle, and remove the wheel. Remove the brake caliper and suspend it out of the way. Reinstall the lug nuts to hold the disc against the hub and visually inspect the disc surface for damage. Check both sides of the disc and if necessary, refinish or replace it. To check disc runout, place a dial indicator near the outer edge of the disc and turn it. If the indicator reading exceeds 0.003 of an inch, the disc needs refinishing or replacement. If not, deglaze the brake pad surface with sandpaper. The disc must not be machined below the specified minimum thickness. To remove and install the disc, remove the caliper mounting bracket and mark the disc in relation to the hub. Clean the hub flange and inside of the disc, then install and tighten the disc securely. Install the caliper mounting bracket and caliper, and tighten the bolts. Install the wheel, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts. Depress the brake pedal to bring the pads into contact with the disc, and thoroughly check the brake operation before normal use.
