To check the Temperature Warning Light System, first, ensure that the light comes on when the Ignition switch is turned on. If it doesn't, check the bulb. If the light stays on even with the engine cold, unplug the wire at the sending unit. If the light goes off, replace the sending unit. However, if the light stays on, it indicates that the wire is grounded somewhere in the harness. For the Temperature Gauge System Check, start by checking the fuse if the gauge is inoperative. If the fuse is okay, unplug the wire connected to the sending unit and ground it with a jumper wire. Turn on the ignition switch and the gauge should now register at maximum. If it does, replace the sending unit. If the gauge is still inoperative, it suggests that the gauge or wiring may be faulty. To remove the sending unit, allow the engine to cool completely and remove the engine cover. Unplug the wire connected to the sending unit and then unscrew the sending unit quickly. For installation, make sure to install the new unit to prevent any loss of coolant. Connect the wire and then install the engine cover.

The coolant temperature switch or sender is located at the left rear of the cylinder head on L4 engines.

The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is a thermistor, a resistor that changes its resistance value based on temperature changes.

In the event of an unusual indication or a fault developing, one should first check the coolant level in the system. Then, ensure that the connecting wiring between the gauge and the sender unit is secure.

As the sensor temperature increases, the resistance values decrease, and vice versa. This change in resistance directly affects the voltage signal from the sensor to the ECM/PCM.

If the lamp does not go out after the engine starts, it could be due to the wiring being grounded between the lamp and the sender unit, a defective temperature sender unit, or a faulty ignition switch.

When the ignition switch is turned on and the starter motor is turning, the indicator light should be on, indicating an overheated engine.

If there is an unusual indication or a fault in the indicator system, it is necessary to check the coolant level in the system and ensure that the connecting wiring between the gauge and the sender unit is secure.
