Q:
How to check and replace Camshaft Position Sensor,Coolant Temperature Sensor,Crankshaft Position Sensor,Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor,Knock Sensor,Oxygen Sensor,Vehicle Speed Sensor,Neutral Safety Switch,MAP Sensor and Throttle Position Sensor on Chevrolet Blazer,S10,GMC Jimmy and Sonoma? Posted by Customer
A:
The checking procedures for various engine sensors and components are as follows: The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor is a thermistor that changes resistance with temperature, and a failure in the circuit can trigger trouble codes. To check it, measure the resistance while cold and warm, and ensure the reference voltage from the PCM is around 5.0 volts. The manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor monitors intake manifold pressure changes and varies its voltage output accordingly. Check the reference voltage and signal voltage with the ignition on and engine off, and observe voltage changes as the engine's vacuum changes. The intake air temperature (IAT) sensor acts as a thermistor, and you can measure its resistance at different temperatures to ensure it changes as expected. Also, monitor the IAT sensor using a scan tool to verify its performance. The oxygen sensor in the exhaust monitors oxygen content, and you can check its millivolt signal while the engine warms up. Inspect the oxygen sensor heater and ensure it receives proper voltage. The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) provides speed data to the PCM and can be checked for reference voltage. The camshaft sensor and crankshaft sensor, depending on the engine type, should be checked for resistance and proper signal output. Finally, the knock sensors detect engine knock and should be checked for reference voltage and resistance. If any component fails these checks, replacement may be necessary.

Q:
What does the oxygen sensor in the exhaust do and how can it be checked for the 2001 Chevrolet Blazer? Posted by Customer
A:
The oxygen sensor in the exhaust monitors oxygen content. To check it, you can check its millivolt signal while the engine warms up. It is also important to inspect the oxygen sensor heater and ensure it receives proper voltage.

Q:
How does the camshaft position sensor operate for Chevrolet C1500 and K1500? Posted by Customer
A:
The camshaft position sensor operates similarly to the crankshaft position sensor, producing a signal pulse once every two crankshaft revolutions. It works in conjunction with the crankshaft position sensor to determine the timing for fuel injection on each cylinder. Only 1996 through 2000 models are equipped with a camshaft position sensor. The sensor is located in the distributor, and it is important to check the terminals in the connector and the wires leading to the sensor for any looseness or breaks. Before checking the sensor, it is necessary to check the voltage supply from the underhood electrical center. Disconnect the electrical connector and connect the positive lead of a voltmeter to the pink wire terminal, while connecting the negative lead to a good engine ground point. The voltage should read approximately 12.0 volts when the ignition key is turned on. If the voltage is incorrect, the wiring from the sensor harness connector to the underhood electrical center should be checked and repaired if necessary. To check the sensor's operation, reconnect the connector and back probe the brown/white wire terminal of the sensor connector using a suitable probe. Connect the positive lead of a voltmeter to the probe and the negative lead to a good engine ground point. Set the meter to the AC volts scale and crank the engine. The meter should indicate approximately 5.0 volts AC. If a CMP sensor signal is not present, the camshaft position sensor should be replaced. To replace the sensor, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and remove the distributor cap and rotor. Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor and rotate the engine until the square slot in the reluctor aligns with the camshaft position sensor. Remove the sensor mounting screws and take out the sensor from the distributor. Installation is the reverse of removal, applying thread locking compound to the sensor, rotor, and distributor cap screws before installing them.

Q:
What is the purpose of the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor for Chevrolet C1500 and K1500? Posted by Customer
A:
The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor provides the PCM with a crankshaft position signal, which is used to determine the spark sequence for each cylinder, control ignition timing, calculate engine speed, and detect misfires. The sensor is triggered by slots on the crankshaft reluctor ring, and as the notches pass the sensor, the magnetic field is altered, producing a pulsating voltage. The ignition system will not operate without a crankshaft position sensor input. To test the sensor, check the terminals and wires for looseness or breaks, and verify the voltage supply from the underhood electrical center. If the voltage is incorrect, repair the wiring. To check the sensor operation, reconnect the connector and back probe the yellow wire terminal, then crank the engine and check for approximately 5.0 volts AC. If no signal is present, replace the sensor. When replacing the sensor, perform a Crankshaft Position Sensor Variation Learning Procedure to avoid false diagnostic trouble codes. Disconnect the battery cable, raise and secure the vehicle, remove the skid plate if necessary, disconnect the electrical connector, remove the mounting bolt, and then install the new sensor.
