Q:
How do I remove the rear brake shoe for Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the rear brake shoe, start by loosening the lug nuts on the rear wheels and raising the vehicle securely on jackstands. Release the parking brake and block the front wheels. Remove the rear wheels and then take off the brake caliper, mounting bracket, and brake disc. Pull the equalizer towards the rear of the vehicle from underneath to expose the inner parking brake cable and clamp it with padded locking pliers to relieve tension on the rear cables. Clean the brake assembly with brake system cleaner and slide the shoe downward to clear the retaining clip, then slide it up and off the actuator. Lift one end of the shoe over the axle flange and remove it. Before installing the new shoe, turn the adjuster screw star wheel in and ensure that the slots in the adjusting screw and tappet are parallel with the backing plate. To install the new shoe, reverse the removal procedure by sliding it under the retaining clip and making sure the ends of the shoe seat properly in the slots of the adjuster screw and tappet. When installing the new shoe and lining assembly, turn the adjuster screw until the shoe lining just drags on the braking surface inside the disc. Then remove the disc and back off the adjuster screw until the shoe lining doesn't drag when the disc is installed and turned. The clearance between the lining surface of the shoe and the braking surface inside the disc should be 0.026-inch. Finally, complete the installation by following the reverse of the removal procedure, ensuring to tighten the caliper bracket bolts, caliper mounting bolts, and wheel lug nuts to the correct torque specifications.

Q:
How to Inspect and Maintain Brake Drums and shoe on Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari? Posted by Customer
A:
To begin, loosen the wheel lug nuts and raise the rear of the vehicle, ensuring it is securely supported on jackstands. It is important to block the front wheels to prevent any rolling. Next, release the parking brake and proceed to remove the wheel. Before reinstalling the drum, it is crucial to inspect it for any cracks, score marks, deep scratches, or hard spots, which may appear as small discolored areas. If any hard spots are present and cannot be eliminated with fine emery cloth, or if any of the aforementioned conditions exist, it is necessary to take the drum to an automotive machine shop for turning. Once the inspection is complete, install the brake drum on the axle flange. Mount the wheel, install the lug nuts, and then lower the vehicle. Finally, perform a series of forward and reverse stops to adjust the brakes until satisfactory pedal action is achieved.
