Use pliers to remove the clip holding the parking brake lever to the stud on the rear shoe.

Remove the rear brake discs and measure the thickness of the lining material on the shoes. If the lining has worn down to 1.0 mm or less, replace the shoes. Inspect the drum portion of the disc for scoring, grooves, or cracks due to heat. If any of these conditions exist or there is significant wear to the drum, the disc must be replaced. Wash off the brake parts with brake system cleaner. Remove the parking brake shoes and upper return springs. Remove the lower return spring and adjuster assembly. Remove the front shoe hold-down clip and pin. Remove the shoe. Remove the strut and spring. Remove the rear shoe and disconnect it from the parking brake shoe lever. Apply a thin coat of high-temperature brake grease to the shoe contact points on the backing plate. Lubricate the adjuster with high-temperature brake grease. Apply a very small amount of high-temperature brake grease to the contact point of the new rear shoe and parking brake lever. Attach the parking brake lever to the rear shoe. Install the rear shoe clip, pin, and shoe. Install the front shoe clip, pin, and shoe. Install the strut and spring. Install the adjuster and lower return spring. Install the upper return springs. Install the brake disc and use two lug nuts with washers (for spacing) to hold the disc securely against the hub. With the hole in the disc and hub flange aligned with the star-wheel adjuster, you can adjust the parking brake shoe-to-drum clear-ance with a screwdriver by turning the star-wheel adjuster up to contract the shoes, or down to expand the shoes. Install the brake caliper. Be sure to tighten the bolts to the torque specifications. Install the wheels, then lower the vehicle to the ground. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to the torque specifications. Check the parking brake for proper operation and adjust it again if necessary.
