Q:
How to check and replace Camshaft Position Sensor,Coolant Temperature Sensor,Crankshaft Position Sensor,Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor,Knock Sensor,Oxygen Sensor,Vehicle Speed Sensor,Neutral Safety Switch,MAP Sensor and Throttle Position Sensor on Chevrolet Blazer,S10,GMC Jimmy and Sonoma? Posted by Customer
A:
The checking procedures for various engine sensors and components are as follows: The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor is a thermistor that changes resistance with temperature, and a failure in the circuit can trigger trouble codes. To check it, measure the resistance while cold and warm, and ensure the reference voltage from the PCM is around 5.0 volts. The manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor monitors intake manifold pressure changes and varies its voltage output accordingly. Check the reference voltage and signal voltage with the ignition on and engine off, and observe voltage changes as the engine's vacuum changes. The intake air temperature (IAT) sensor acts as a thermistor, and you can measure its resistance at different temperatures to ensure it changes as expected. Also, monitor the IAT sensor using a scan tool to verify its performance. The oxygen sensor in the exhaust monitors oxygen content, and you can check its millivolt signal while the engine warms up. Inspect the oxygen sensor heater and ensure it receives proper voltage. The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) provides speed data to the PCM and can be checked for reference voltage. The camshaft sensor and crankshaft sensor, depending on the engine type, should be checked for resistance and proper signal output. Finally, the knock sensors detect engine knock and should be checked for reference voltage and resistance. If any component fails these checks, replacement may be necessary.

Q:
How to check the Neutral Safety Switch on Chevrolet Blazer,S10,GMC Jimmy and Sonoma? Posted by Customer
A:
Try to start the engine in each gear. The engine should crank only in Park or Neutral. Make sure the steering column lock allows the key to go into the Lock position only when the shift lever is in Park. The ignition key should come out only in the Lock position.

Q:
How can I remove the Park/Neutral switch on the 1999 Chevrolet Blazer? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the Park/Neutral switch on 1994 models, unplug the electrical connector and pull the switch straight out of the steering column. Align the actuator with the holes in the shift tube, press down on the front of the switch until the tangs snap into the rectangular holes in the steering column jacket.

Q:
How to adjust and replace the Neutral Safety Switch in Chevrolet C1500 and K1500? Posted by Customer
A:
For 1994 and earlier models, to adjust the shift lever switch, place the shift lever in Neutral (N) and move the switch housing fully toward the Low (L) gear position to the right, then shift the lever to Park (P) to ensure proper adjustment. To replace the switch, place the shift lever in Neutral, unplug the electrical connectors, spread the tangs on the housing, and lift the switch. Align the actuator on the switch with the hole in the shift tube, position the rear part of the switch to fit into the lower jacket's cutout, push down on the front to engage the two tangs, and move the shift lever to Park to complete the adjustment. Plug in the electrical connectors. For 1995 and later models, to replace and adjust the switch, firmly apply the parking brake and set the shift lever to Neutral. Pry the shift cable from the transmission shift lever ball-stud, remove the nut retaining the shift lever to the shaft, and take off the lever. Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the mounting bolts, and slide the switch off the shaft. Lightly file the shaft's end if needed. To install the switch with the shaft still in Neutral, align the switch's flats with those on the shaft, lower the switch onto the shaft, and install the bolts. Adjust the switch's alignment by moving it as necessary. Reinstall the shift lever and cable, verify starting in Park and Neutral, and adjust further if needed by loosening the mounting bolts and rotating the switch slightly until it functions correctly.

Q:
What is the purpose of the starter safety switch used on Chevrolet C1500 and K1500? Posted by Customer
A:
The Neutral Safety Switch used on these models is either a clutch interlock switch (manual transmission-equipped models) or a neutral start switch (automatic transmission equipped models). The clutch interlock switch prevents the engine from being cranked unless the clutch is depressed. The neutral start switch prevents the engine from being cranked unless the gear selector is in Park or Neutral. If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, try to start the vehicle in each gear. The engine should crank only in Park or Neutral. If it cranks in any other gear, the neutral start switch is faulty or in need of adjustment. If the vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission, place the shift lever in Neutral. The engine should crank only when the clutch pedal is depressed. If it cranks without the pedal being depressed, the switch, located near the top of the clutch pedal arm, is probably faulty. If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, make sure the steering column lock allows the key to go into the Lock position only when the shift lever is in Park. The ignition key should come out only in the Lock position.

Q:
How do you replace and adjust the switch for the 1997 Chevrolet K1500? Posted by Customer
A:
Firmly apply the parking brake and set the shift lever to Neutral.

Q:
How to check and replace the Park/Neutral switch on Chevrolet Blazer,S10,GMC Jimmy and Sonoma? Posted by Customer
A:
To check the Park/Neutral switch, first ensure that it prevents the engine from starting in any gear other than Park or Neutral (also activates the backup lights on 1995 and later models when in Reverse). On 1994 models, remove the steering column insulator panel and unplug the electrical connector from the switch terminals. On 1995 and later models, raise the vehicle and securely place it on jack stands, then unplug the electrical connector from the Park/Neutral switch. Use an ohmmeter to check continuity across the switch terminals (for 1994 models) or the indicated switch terminals (for 1995 and 1996 models). There should be continuity with the shift lever in Park or Neutral, and no continuity in any other position (except for Reverse on 1995 and later models, where continuity is expected for the backup lights). If the switch doesn't operate as described for 1994 models, replace it; for 1995 and 1996 models, try adjusting it before retesting, and if it still fails, replace it. For removal of the 1994 model switch, unplug the electrical connector and pull the switch straight out of the steering column, then align the actuator with the holes in the shift tube, press down on the front of the switch until the tangs snap into the rectangular holes in the steering column jacket. For adjustment, move the shift lever to the Park position, allowing the main housing and housing back to ratchet the switch to the correct position. Installation is the reverse of removal. For the removal of 1995 and later models, apply the parking brake, place the shift lever in Neutral, disconnect the battery cable, raise the vehicle on jack stands, remove the nut and manual lever, unplug the electrical connector from the switch, and remove the switch retaining bolts. Slide the switch off the manual shaft. Installation involves using a special adjustment tool, aligning the switch with the manual shaft flats, sliding it onto the manual shaft, and securing it with mounting bolts. Remove the adjustment tool and complete the remaining installation steps, tightening the manual lever retaining nut to the specified torque.
