Q:
How to remove and install Ignition Switch on Cadillac ElDorado and Fleetwood? Posted by Customer
A:
When working on Cadillac DeVille and Fleetwood models, it is crucial to disable the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system to prevent accidental airbag deployment or injuries. To disable the SIR system, start by turning the ignition switch OFF and disconnecting the negative battery cable. Remove the specified SIR fuse from the fuse panel, and on certain models, remove the left lower sound insulator. Next, detach the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and disconnect the yellow 2-way connector at the base of the steering column. Lower and support the steering column for better access. Remove the screw and washer retaining the ignition switch and dimmer switch, along with the ground wire. Then, remove the dimmer switch from the rod and the ignition switch mounting stud. Proceed to remove the ignition switch from the ignition switch actuator, and detach any necessary electrical connectors. When installing the ignition switch, ensure it is in the OFF-LOCK position, and secure it with the mounting stud. After completing the installation, re-enable the SIR system by connecting the yellow 2-way connector, installing the SIR fuse, connecting the negative battery cable, and verifying the proper functioning of the "INFLATABLE RESTRAINT" indicator light. For Eldorado and Seville early models, disable the SIR system by following similar steps to those mentioned above. Remove SIR fuse No. 19 from the fuse panel, the left side sound insulator, and the Connector Position Assurance (CPA). Remove the 2 screws and the center trim plate, followed by the 5 screws securing the knee bolster and the 4 screws for the instrument panel steering column reinforcement plate. Remove the ignition switch wiring protector and retaining screws, and detach the necessary connectors. Install the ignition switch in the OFF-LOCK position, securing it with the retaining screws. Then, reconnect the turn signal switch connector, ignition, and turn signal switch column harness connectors to the instrument panel harness. Reattach the wiring protector and reassemble the components. To enable the SIR system, follow the procedure by connecting the yellow 2-way connector, installing the SIR fuse, connecting the negative battery cable, and verifying the proper functioning of the "INFLATABLE RESTRAINT" indicator light. For late models of Eldorado and Seville, disable the SIR system by turning the ignition switch OFF and disconnecting the negative battery cable. Remove the specified SIR fuse, the left side sound insulator, the Connector Position Assurance (CPA), and the yellow 2-way connector at the base of the steering column. Next, remove the knee bolster and instrument panel steering column reinforcement plate, followed by the lower support bracket and the upper column support bolts. Lower the steering column and remove the ignition switch wiring protector, along with the retaining screw and nut for the ignition switch. Detach the necessary connectors and proceed to install the ignition switch in the OFF-LOCK position, securing it with the retaining screws. Reconnect the turn signal switch connector, ignition, and turn signal switch column harness connectors to the instrument panel harness. Install the ignition switch wiring protector and raise the steering column, securing it with the upper and lower column support bolts. Align the steering column to the instrument panel opening and tighten the support bolts. Reassemble the remaining components, and to enable the SIR system, follow the provided steps, including connecting the yellow 2-way connector, installing the SIR fuse, connecting the negative battery cable, and verifying the proper functioning of the "INFLATABLE RESTRAINT" indicator light.
