  Q: How do you remove the power steering pump?

  A: To remove the power steering pump, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Place a drain pan underneath the pump to catch any fluid that may leak out. If you have a 1992 or later VIN W or X model, remove the air cleaner assembly. For 1993 and later models, remove the hood latch mechanism and the upper and lower fan shroud. Remove the drive belt from the power steering pump pulley. If you have a 1990 or earlier V6 engine, remove the brace at the rear of the pump. For 1997 and later models with speed-dependent steering, disconnect the wiring harness from the steering assist control solenoid. If you have a single serpentine drive belt, use a puller to remove the pulley from the pump. Remove the pump mounting bolts and, if necessary, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Move the pump as needed to access the hose fittings. Disconnect the hoses from the pump and immediately plug the hose ends and pump fittings to prevent fluid leakage. Carefully remove the pump from the vehicle, being cautious not to spill power steering fluid on any painted surfaces. To install the power steering pump, position the pump/bracket assembly on the block and connect the hoses, tightening the bolts/nut finger-tight. If the pump was removed separately, position it on the block, connect the hoses, and securely tighten the bolts/nut. Connect the hoses to the power steering pump and tighten them securely. For models with a serpentine drive belt, use a special tool to install the drive belt pulley onto the pump. Install the drive belt and adjust the tension if necessary. Complete the remaining installation steps in reverse order. Once installation is complete, fill the power steering fluid reservoir with the recommended fluid and bleed the power steering system.
