Chevrolet El Camino Fuel Pump Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a fuel pump?
A: Using two wrenches, one can remove the fuel inlet and outlet pipes without damaging the pump or connections. Finally, get rid of the fuel pump mounting bolts, the pump and gasket itself. First of all, if you are taking off that pushrod, ensure that either pump adapter and gasket or pipe plug is removed as needed. Begin with installing the pushrod using the gasket sealant on the pipe plug or gasket where appropriate. This is not necessary for V6 engine since you can use heavy grease to hold it in place. A new gasket has to be used while fixing a pump. As concerns 231 V6 engine, put a fuel pump into position so that its rocker arm contacts the camshaft accordingly. Apply gasket sealant on screw threads. Finally, you should connect fuel pipes to start your engine and check if there are any leaks after starting it.
  • Q: What is the purpose of the fuel pump in the engine?
A: The fuel pump is a sealed type and is actuated from the engine camshaft. A pushrod is used between the camshaft and the pump rocker. Fuel pumps on 231 V6 engines are driven directly from the camshaft eccentric without pushrod. No servicing can be carried out as the unit is sealed, but if the pump is suspected of being faulty, carry out the following test. Verify that gas is in the Fuel Tank. Disconnect the primary wire which runs between the coil and the distributor to prevent the engine firing when the starter motor is actuated. (1970- 1974 models only). For 1975-1980 models, disconnect the distributor wiring marked 'BAT. Disconnect the fuel inlet pipe from the Carburetor and place its open end in a container. Operate the starter motor and check that well-defined spurts of fuel are being ejected from the open end of the pipe. If so, the pump is operating correctly; if not. replace the pump as described in the following.
