Chevrolet Nova Coolant Temperature Sensor Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How to replace Coolant Temperature Sensor in a Chevrolet Nova?
A: Should the temperature warning light fail to come on when the ignition switch is turned on, it is important to check for a bulb. On the other hand, if the light stays on even with the engine cold, disconnect the wire at the sending unit. Furthermore, please note that this coolant temperature sending unit is located on the left side between spark plugs. However, if after you have replaced it and the light goes off replace the sending unit. Alternatively, a grounded wire somewhere in harness could cause it to stay on. What should be done if we observe that there is inoperative temperature gauge? Check for a fuse in case of a bad one; unplug wire connected to sending unit and ground with jumper wire. Then momentarily turn on ignition switch and gauge should go up to maximum. In case it does so then replace this sending unit; otherwise it may be due to defective gauge or wiring problem. That is why one has to unplug wire connected to this sending unit before replacing them. Next unscrew sending unit and immediately install new unit to avoid loss of coolant. Finally tighten this sending unit properly as well as connect wire and check indicator operation.
