Pontiac G6 Steering Column Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How do you remove the steering column?
A: To remove the steering column, start by parking the vehicle with the wheels pointing straight ahead and disconnecting the battery. Disable the airbag system and remove the steering column covers, Steering Wheel, airbag clockspring, steering column switches and housing, and knee bolster. Mark the relationship of the steering column shaft to the intermediate shaft coupler and remove the pinch bolt. Disconnect any remaining electrical connectors and wiring harnesses that may interfere with removal. Put the steering wheel in the uppermost position and lock it there. If the vehicle has adjustable pedals, remove the accelerator pedal assembly bracket nuts. Carefully guide the column out from the instrument panel. To install the steering column, guide it into position and connect the steering shaft with the intermediate shaft coupler, aligning the marks. Install the mounting fasteners, starting with the lower one and then the upper two, tightening them to the proper torque specifications. Install a new pinch bolt and tighten it. Finally, reverse the remaining steps of the removal procedure and reinstall the accelerator pedal assembly if applicable.
