  Q: How to Remove and Install Speed Sensor?

  A: Disable the air bag system, if equipped, and disconnect the negative Battery Cable. To gain access to the sensor and buffer behind the speedometer, the instrument cluster must be partially removed, unplugging the harness connector at the rear of the cluster. Unplug the amplifier connector, remove the speed sensor attaching screw and remove the sensor through the opening in the base of the instrument panel. Route the sensor wire connector and harness through the opening in the base of the instrument panel, install the sensor on its bracket and install the retaining screw, engage the amplifier connector, reinstall the instrument cluster and connect the electrical harness, connect the negative battery cable and reset the radio, clock and any other applicable electronic devices. On some models, it will be easier to access the speed sensor with the wheel removed, so loosen the wheel lugs, raise and support the vehicle, remove the wheel, disconnect the wiring harness from the speed sensor, remove the retainer clip or screw, carefully lift the sensor out of the transmission, remove the 0-ring, lubricate a new 0-ring with appropriate transmission fluid and install the ring on the sensor, install the sensor and secure the retaining clip, or tighten the screw to 98 inch lbs. (11 Nm), connect the Speedometer Cable if it was removed, then engage the wiring harness, install the right front wheel and lower the vehicle.
