Chevrolet Astro Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How do you remove the rear shock absorber?
A: Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands and block the front wheels to keep the vehicle from rolling. Remove the shock absorber lower mounting nut and bolt. On the right side shock absorber, remove the parking brake cable bracket. Remove the shock absorber upper mounting nut and slide the shock absorber off the bolt that protrudes through the frame. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  • Q: How to remove and install a front shock absorber?
A: To remove the shock absorber, start by loosening the wheel lug nuts and raising the vehicle on jackstands. Remove the wheel and apply the parking brake. Then, remove the upper shock absorber stem nut using an open-end wrench to prevent the stem from turning. If the nut is stuck due to rust, apply penetrating oil and allow it to soak. You may need to use locking pliers to keep the stem from turning. Next, remove the two tower shock mount bolts and pull the shock absorber out through the bottom of the lower Control Arm. Don't forget to remove the washers and rubber grommets from the top of the shock absorber. For installation, start by extending the new shock absorber as far as possible. Place a new washer and rubber grommet on the stem and guide the shock up through the coil spring and into the upper mount. Install the upper rubber grommet and washer, ensuring that the grommets are centered in the mount by wiggling the stem back and forth. Tighten the stem nut securely. Finally, install the lower mounting bolts and tighten them securely.
