  Q: How do I replace an alternator in a Chevrolet Corvette?

  A: You should disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Now, remove the drive belt. The protective cover over the alternator's battery terminal has to be pushed back; thereafter, remove its nut to disconnect the Battery Cable from the alternator. Also disconnect the electrical connector from the alternator. Remove the mounting fasteners for the alternator and then take off that part. When getting a new one, carry along your old alternator with you. Make sure that it looks just like your previously used unit. Look at electrical terminals on its back side. These should be in the same number, size and location as those on the old unit (alternator). Lastly, look at its identification numbers. They will either be stamped into the housing or be printed into a tag attached to it. Therefore make sure that both units have similar ID numbers. A good number of new/rebuilt alternators lack pulleys hence necessitating a change of pulley from your previous one to this new/rebuilt one. Find out what is usually done about pulley swaps when buying an alternator from any store. Some shops will even do this for free. If your local auto parts store doesn't provide this service, you will have to buy a puller tool for removing pulleys so as to do it yourself.
