Oldsmobile Omega Steering Knuckle Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How to remove the Steering Knuckle?
A: Remove the hub and bearing assembly. Mark the cam bolt so the proper camber alignment can be maintained upon installation. Remove the cam bolt and the upper strut-to-steering knuckle mounting bolt. Remove the nut that secures the Tie Rod to the steering knuckle. Using a GM special tool or equivalent, disengage the tie rod from the steering knuckle. Remove the bolt that secures the lower balljoint in the lower control arm to the steering knuckle and disengage the balljoint. Remove the steering knuckle from the axleshaft. If the steering knuckle is being replaced, install a new steering knuckle seal into the new knuckle. This is done by greasing both the seal and the knuckle bore and then tapping the seal into place using a hammer and the proper sized socket. Install the steering knuckle onto the axleshaft. Insert the balljoint stud into the steering knuckle, then insert the bolt and nut and tighten the nut to specs. Loosely install the strut to the steering knuckle by installing the cam bolt and upper strut-to-steering knuckle mounting bolt. Install the hub and bearing assembly, shield and rotor. Place a jackstand under the hub and bearing assembly and rotor to support it. Then lower the car enough to align the cam with its mark made during the removal procedure, and tighten the bolts to specs. Engage the tie rod with the steering knuckle using a C-clamp and a 1-½-in (27 mm) socket. Install the tie rod nut and torque it to specs. Install the brake caliper. Install the wheel and lower the car to the ground. Torque the hub nuts to specs.
