Q:
How to remove and replace the vibration damper in 2.3L four cylinder (Quad-4) engine for a Chevrolet Beretta? Posted by Customer
A:
Remove the cable from the negative battery terminal. On models equipped with the Delco Loc II audio system, ensure that the lockout feature is turned off before performing any procedure that requires disconnecting the battery. Next, remove the drive belt. With the parking brake applied and the shifter in Park (automatic) or in gear (manual), raise the front of the vehicle and securely support it on jackstands. Remove the bolt from the front of the crankshaft. A breaker bar will probably be necessary since the bolt is very tight. If the special tool is not available, insert a bar through a hole in the damper to prevent the crankshaft from turning. Using a puller, remove the harmonic balancer from the crankshaft. Use a bolt-type puller that applies force to the harmonic balancer hub-if a jaw-type puller that applies force to the outer edge is used, the harmonic balancer will be damaged. Check the oil seal and replace it if necessary. Apply a thin layer of clean multi-purpose grease to the seal contact surface of the harmonic balancer hub. Position the harmonic balancer on the crankshaft and slide it through the seal until it bottoms against the crankshaft sprocket. Note that the slot (keyway) in the hub must be aligned with the Woodruff key in the end of the crankshaft. The crankshaft bolt can also be used to press the harmonic balancer into position. Tighten the crankshaft bolt. The remaining installation steps are the reverse of removal.

Q:
How to remove and install a vibration damper in V6 engine for a Chevrolet Beretta? Posted by Customer
A:
Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. On models equipped with the Delco Loc II audio system, make sure the lockout feature is turned off before performing any procedure that requires disconnecting the battery. Loosen the lug nuts on the right front wheel. Raise the vehicle and securely support it on jackstands. Remove the right front tire. Remove the right front inner fender splash shield. Remove the right front inner shield bolts to gain access to the harmonic balancer. Remove the serpentine drivebelt. On models equipped with an automatic transaxle, remove the driveplate cover and position a large screwdriver in the ring gear teeth to prevent the crankshaft from turning while an assistant removes the harmonic balancer-to-crankshaft bolt. On models equipped with a manual transaxle, engage high gear and apply the brakes while an assistant removes the harmonic balancer bolt. The bolt is usually very tight, so use a large breaker bar and a six-point socket. Use a bolt-type puller to remove the balancer from the crankshaft. Leave the Woodruff key in place at the end of the crankshaft. Installation is the reverse of removal. Make sure to apply engine oil or multi-purpose grease to the seal contact surface of the balancer hub. If it is not lubricated, the seal lip could be damaged and oil leakage may occur. Align the balancer hub keyway with the Woodruff key. Tighten the harmonic balancer-to-crankshaft bolt. Reinstall the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal.
