Customer Questions & Answers

Q:
How to remove and install a radiator in a Chevrolet C1500 and K1500? Posted by Customer
A:
Late model vehicles use spring type radiator hose clamps, which should only be reused if the hose connection is clean and dry. If the connection has been painted or coated, it should be scraped down to bare metal. Aftermarket hoses should not be used with these clamps and should be replaced with conventional worm drive type clamps. To begin the radiator removal process, disconnect the negative cable from the battery and then disconnect all hoses and lines from the radiator, including the overflow, heater, upper and lower radiator hoses, and transmission cooler lines if applicable. Use a flare nut wrench to remove the transmission cooler lines and plug the ends to prevent leakage and dirt from entering the system. If there is an engine oil cooler, disconnect the lines on the opposite side of the radiator. Remove the fan shroud by unbolt and remove the center and upper mounting screws, and then lift the radiator from the engine compartment, being careful not to contact the fan blades. If there are radiator mounting brackets, remove them as well. Before installing the radiator, replace any damaged hose clamps and radiator hoses. To install the radiator, ensure that it seats properly in the lower saddles and that the upper brackets secure it without compressing the radiator core. After installation, check the engine oil and automatic transmission fluid levels.
